When Schools offer subjects based on the gender?

By Madhurie Singh, May 19, 2025

“What happens when children make irreversible decisions about their identity before fully understanding the lifelong consequences? Across the West, young students are now speaking out—regretting gender surgeries they underwent in school years, influenced by fleeting trends and unbalanced guidance. Their stories serve as a warning to parents and educators everywhere: Are we truly protecting our children, or are we exposing them to risks they don’t yet comprehend?”

Part 1: Real-Life Stories of Detransition Regret

1. Chloe Cole (USA)

Chloe Cole, born in 2004 in California, began identifying as transgender at the age of 12 after exposure to transgender ideology on social media platforms. By 13, she was prescribed puberty blockers and testosterone. At 15, she underwent a double mastectomy. However, by 17, Chloe began to experience profound regret over her transition. She has since detransitioned and become an activist, advocating against gender-affirming care for minors. Chloe has filed a lawsuit against the healthcare providers, alleging that she was not adequately informed about the long-term consequences of the treatments and surgeries she underwent.

2. Ritchie Herron (UK)

Ritchie Herron, a 35-year-old man from the UK, underwent gender reassignment surgery after being diagnosed with gender dysphoria. Post-surgery, he experienced severe complications, including chronic pain, infections, and incontinence. Ritchie has publicly expressed deep regret over his transition, stating that he was not provided with adequate psychological evaluation or informed consent before undergoing irreversible procedures. His story has been highlighted as a cautionary tale about the potential risks of hastily proceeding with gender-affirming treatments without thorough assessments.

Part 2: Implications for Indian Parents

As an educator and parent in Pune, India, it’s essential to recognize the growing global discourse on gender identity and its influence on educational institutions. While India has its unique cultural and societal context, the increasing exposure to Western narratives through social media platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat means that Indian students are not insulated from these discussions.

Key Considerations for Parents:

  • Open Dialogue: Engage in open and non-judgmental conversations with your children about gender identity, ensuring they feel safe to express their thoughts and feelings.
  • Critical Evaluation: Encourage critical thinking when consuming content related to gender identity on social media. Discuss the importance of understanding the full spectrum of experiences, including stories of detransition.
  • Educational Curriculum: Stay informed about your child’s school curriculum. If gender identity topics are being introduced, understand the context and content to ensure it aligns with your family’s values and beliefs.
  • Professional Guidance: If your child expresses confusion or distress about their gender identity, seek guidance from qualified mental health professionals who can provide comprehensive support.

Part 3: Recommendations for Schools

Educational institutions play a pivotal role in shaping young minds. Therefore, it’s crucial for schools to approach topics of gender identity with sensitivity and responsibility.

Recommendations:

  • Inclusive Curriculum: Develop a curriculum that presents a balanced view of gender identity, incorporating diverse perspectives and experiences, including those of individuals who have detransitioned.
  • Parental Involvement: Engage parents in discussions about curriculum changes related to gender identity, ensuring transparency and collaboration.
  • Professional Training: Provide training for educators to handle discussions on gender identity sensitively and knowledgeably, avoiding the promotion of any singular ideology.
  • Student Support: Establish support systems within the school for students grappling with gender identity issues, ensuring they have access to qualified counselors and resources.

Conclusion

The stories of Chloe Cole and Ritchie Herron underscore the profound impact that decisions regarding gender identity can have on young individuals. As Indian society becomes increasingly interconnected with global narratives, it’s imperative for parents and educators to approach this topic with vigilance, empathy, and a commitment to the well-being of our children.
