PUNE: Regular admissions to primary and pre-primary schools in the state will be held as per yearly routine, the state director of primary education, Mahavir Mane, said in a notification issued on Monday. Parents and schools were confused over the admission process after a section of the media reported that the admissions for regular seats will be conducted online by the state education department and in a centralised system.
Mane said, “The state has decided not to intervene in the admission procedure of the regular seats and schools can conduct their own procedure as per annual practice. The only change is that schools must follow a schedule of admissions which will be released by the education department at the end of December.”

Earlier, there was furore as parents opposed the system as they would not get a school of their choice due to the centralised procedure, while school authorities said that they should be given the powers to do the admissions.

Mane cleared the air on Monday and said that some sections of the media misjudged the notification which said that the online and centralized admission procedure would be held for the 25% seats reserved for the economically backward sections according to the rules of the Right to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act.

Mane said, “The schedule to conduct the admissions right from distribution of forms to announcing the list of candidates selected would be declared by the education directorate by December-end and it should be followed by all school boards in the state. The admission process would begin two months before start of the academic year.”

Schools have heaved a sigh of relief following the notification. Mayura Rao, principal of a CBSE board school, said, “We are happy that the state education department has given us the liberty to conduct the admissions for the remaining 75% on our own.”
