Will English Lose Its Value and Importance In Bharat
By Madhurie Singh, June 20, 2025

I always dreamt of a day when Bharatiyas would proudly speak and celebrate their own mother tongues — Hindi, Marathi, Bangla, Kannada, Tamil, Punjabi, Bhojpuri, Maithili, Pahari.
I often felt sad watching people who couldn’t speak English being looked down upon — sometimes by their own families. The “angrez” hangover ran so deep that parents felt embarrassed if their child stammered in English, even though the child spoke perfect Marathi or Tamil.
But today, I wake up from that dark dream — into a bright, beautiful day. Bharat is changing. A time is coming when we will respect every bhasha. And English will lose its value and Importance.
The Shift Is Happening
Across Bharat, parents are asking: “Why should we measure our child’s worth by English alone?”
In homes, parks, and schools, I now hear this: “Let my child first master her own bhasha. Let her think in her mother tongue.
”Parents aren’t just saying this — they’re acting on it. Thanks to NEP 2020, AI tools, and new policies, Indian languages are regaining pride of place.
The shift is visible — in classrooms, in WhatsApp groups, even in engineering colleges.
Why Did English Become So Important?
Few parents today know this history. But it matters. British PM Winston Churchill hated Indians and believed they should remain mentally enslaved. He wanted Indians to stay divided and broken. Then came Thomas Babington Macaulay, who proposed: “Replace Indian languages with English in education. Create Indians who sound English, but remain loyal to British rulers.”
His “official” reason? “This will make communication easier with England via English-speaking Indians.
How The Government Is Leading The Change
NEP 2020’s Three-Language Formula
NEP 2020 mandates three languages — typically your child’s mother tongue, Hindi, and English but can be changed too — with flexibility for each state. It promotes the mother tongue as the primary medium till Grade 5, or even Grade 8.
States like Maharashtra embraced this. Marathi now starts from Std I. Students can pick any Indian language as their third language.
Engineering & STEM in Regional Languages
AICTE approved engineering courses in 11 regional languages. By 2026, engineering textbooks will release in 12 bhashas — enabling future engineers to think deeply in their own languages.
Higher Education & Exams in Regional Languages
UGC, AICTE, Bar Council — they are translating textbooks.
IGNOU launched MBAs in Hindi and Odia, with more languages coming soon.
This move lets professionals excel without the English filter.
Bharatiya Bhasha Summer Camps & Tribal Languages
CBSE launched Bharatiya Bhasha Summer Camps. Children learn through stories, songs, and fun — in their own languages.
In Jharkhand, tribal languages like Kurukh, Mundari, Ho, Santhali now feature in school lessons.
Translation & Official Work
The Bharatiya Bhasha Anubhag and National Translation Mission are driving big change.
Haryana now mandates its education department to work in Hindi.
My Mother… and Our Family WhatsApp Group
Here’s a story from my home.
My mother doesn’t speak English — though she taught us kids to read and write in English.
She never says it, but often struggles to follow our family WhatsApp chats. Out of habit, we write in English. She guesses the gist and replies in Hinglish.
I will be the happiest when we all start writing in Hindi — just for her. That will be true respect.
Why English Will No Longer Be “King”
English once ruled — for jobs and status. But that era is ending.
Engineering students will think in their own languages.
MBAs in Hindi and Odia will empower professionals.
AI tools will soon erase English barriers.
AI will enable all devices to translate any language to the language of choice when reading, writing, speaking, listening. So where is the need to learn English? 😄
English will remain useful — but as a skill, not as a crown.
Change Is Already Happening
In Pune, Delhi, Bengaluru — and even small towns — parents are taking action:
They welcome NEP’s three-language education.
Students now pursue engineering in Marathi, Tamil, Kannada. The first batch of Marathi Engineering batch passed out and was placed too with flying salaries which is still the mark of success. May be next thing to change will be the mark of success from salary to happiness. What is your opinion? 😁
Professionals choose MBAs in Indian languages.
No child should feel shame for speaking Bangla or Bhojpuri.
No family should waste money on “spoken English” out of fear.
Bharat’s Beautiful Future
In 5–10 years, Bharat will transform:
Kids will speak Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Punjabi, Bhojpuri with pride.
No mother will feel guilty if her child speaks Maithili, not “perfect” English.
No father will chase English classes out of social fear.
English will become a tool — not a ticket to status.
What Can Parents Do Today?
Start today:
Speak to your child in your bhasha.
Join Bharatiya Bhasha camps or events.
Support higher education in Indian languages.
Build their confidence — in their roots.
Impact on Your Child’s Life
This is a boon in your child’s life. With English losing its importance, mother tongue and regional languages will grow. Content will be published and taught in a language which your child understands without any effort. I still sometimes, translate in hindi something that is a bit tough. Why? Because our brain is wired to understand what we heard as a toddler, when family members spoke in mother tongue and as a baby we grasped the words related with actions.
So Every concept taught in mother tongue will enter the head without any effort. The time needed by your child’s brain to first translate from English to mother tongue to understand a concept will reduce to half. More brain capacity to learn more, faster and deeper.
Conclusion: The Dawn of Bharatiya Bhashas
Each morning, I feel hopeful.
NEP reforms, AICTE’s textbooks, IGNOU’s MBAs, CBSE camps — all show Bharat is reclaiming pride in her languages.
Soon:
Every bhasha — From Rajasthani to Assamese , from Urdu to Malayalam — will thrive.
English will stand alongside, not above.
Our children will grow — with roots, pride, and clear thinking — in the language of their hearts.
Children will learn in their mother tongue which will improve grasping of the topics, leading to creativity and innovation.
Bharat will become Vishwa Guru again.
