Don’t let the best watermelons go out of the country

Written By Madhurie Singh Last Modified Date: June 19, 2018

It’s a fact and beautiful lesson about a farmer in a village in India, who grew largest watermelons. In the world competitions too his watermelons were the biggest and the best. He used to make the village children eat the largest melons that he won. His son would want him to sell those melons instead.
After a few years, the old man died and his son took over the farming. He started selling the largest melons out of the country and making big profits. People from various countries would bid highest for his melons. He became richest village man in two years. He would gloat around and show off his wealth to everyone.

https://madhuriesingh.com/thinking-aloud/dont-let-the-best-watermelons-go-out-of-the-country/
The third year, the size of the melons were not large enough neither was the taste good.
People did not pay him much as other countries were now producing largest watermelons!
He thought may be this season there was less rainfall and may be his farm needed more manure. He imported chemical fertilizers from the winning countries. Yet his produce were again smaller than others! He was very upset. Then he went to his father’s friend and shared his problem. His father’s friend told him something that you must read very carefully and slowly.
He said, “Son, your father was a smart man. He used to never let his best watermelons go out of the village. So he would give it to the village children to eat. The village children did the free labor of taking out hundres of seeds and spitting them in his farm. He would collect those seeds and save them to grow the next crop. That is why his watermelons were always the largest and the best. He never sold them to other countries.
You on the other hand were short sighted. You wanted to become rich in short period. So you have given away the best quality seeds to the other countries! Now they are winning while you have poor quality watermelons.
www.Madhuriesingh.com
Moral of the story. When the good brains and good genes is easily allowed to migrate out of the country, slowly the over all quality of brains will deteriorate while the countries where they migrated to will flourish. We need infrastructure and research facilities for the best quality melons to stay back in the country to produce best quality melons in future too. 😁 Or At least marry them here and make them stay here. Government should actually save the genes from these super performers, super achievers and great human beings. 😊

Haldi Turmeric Needs this ingredient to be absorbed properly

Written By Madhurie Singh Last Modified Date: May 10, 2018

turmeric root and powder

Curcumin is taking the Western world by storm. While Indians have been using it daily in their curry and dishes. But there is one essential information missing to the Western people, which I am sure we Indians will soon copy and lose the benefits of Haldi or Turmeric.

In Indian curry masala and dishes, we add a lot of various garam masalas in powdered or seed, flower, fruit, bark or leaf form. We add one teaspoon and we are done. Thank God for the ancient cooking in India. Such knowledge and richness passed down to generations without having to worry about healthy food.

But ever since we globalized our cuisine and food recipes, we are adopting Western recipes too which lack the essential benefit of Garam Masalas. All they add is a bit of salt and pepper. A little more enterprising chef may try adding parsley and garlic.

Jai Ho our traditional gyan of recipes that we were blessed with different masalas that must be added with different vegetables, pulses, and non-vegetarian dishes.

Off late the latest fad in West is to consume Turmeric. I was quite surprised to read that they add haldi in their coffee and tea. Well its stupid to add a good ingredient with a bad one like coffee and tea. But I will not discuss tea and coffee in this post but how to not copy the western way to consuming haldi.

So we Indians need not worry as we take atleast one teaspoon haldi per day in our food.

But if you want to increase your intake for health benefits like fighting cold, cough, inflammation, joint pains then you must know the right way to consume.

If you want to drink Haldi in Milk with honey or sugar, add one teaspoon of Ghee. Haldi is absorbed faster when it has an oily friend along with it. Else most of haldi will be down the flush.

And now the most important ingredient that will ensure that haldi is absorbed by maximum percentage and not flushed out by the liver or kidney is Kali mirch powder or black pepper powder. If you have to drink one tsp of Haldi in warm water, you must add a pinch of kali mirch powder. Black pepper is proven to increase the absorption of curcumin in Haldi by tenfold.

pepper

I boil lots of ginger and haldi and add a pinch of pepper whenever I sip a glass of this powerful anti-inflammatory drink. Give it to elderly people especially.

Though I have not yet gotten my sons to develop taste for this awesome drink, I guess when they are grown up they will read my blog and drink the power drink.

What is the future of learning and career by Nilekani

Written By Madhurie Singh Last Modified Date: September 8, 2017

Nandan Nilekani at IIT Madras shared valuable gems of advice to the youth.

Change is the only constant and disruptive technologies are only quickening its pace. “I’ve been an entrepreneur all my life. Never has the pace of change been as high as it is today. Today, we are facing a large number of disruptive forces, especially those caused by technology,” Nilekani said. He shared the example of the iPhone, which is currently celebrating its 10th anniversary. “What we have seen in the past 10 years is a complete change in the balance of technology from serving the enterprise to serving the consumer. Today, when you look at the leading companies in the world by market capitalization, they are all companies that service consumers like Facebook, Google, Amazon, Apple and so on. This is because the balance of power has shifted to consumer technology,” he said.
Life is about constant learning and relearning. “The good news is that you’ve got a degree from IIT-Madras. The not-so-good news is that you can’t stop learning. You’ll have to keep learning for the rest of your life because we are now entering an era of lifelong learning,” he said, adding that lifelong learning did not mean “going to a campus and have fun for five years”. It’s going to be just-in-time learning. A lot of it will even be online learning. It will be learning in short bursts, anytime learning, anywhere learning.

This need for constant learning and relearning will come because

  • of our collective inability to predict the kind of jobs that will be done in future. Or the kind of organizations that people will be working for in future.
  • The high rate of automation in the jobs will have an impact on the way jobs are done. “We have seen in the past that technology has made repetitive jobs go away as computers became more and more powerful. In the past 10-15 years, you are seeing the rise of AI [artificial intelligence] and machine learning. And increasingly, in the last five to six years, the rise of deep learning, which allows you to use a new kind of technology called neural networks that use a lot of data to make machines smarter and smarter.
  • This is only going to continue. We are in what is called the second half of the chessboard. That means that the rate of change is doubling every 18 months, which means that many jobs which exist today, may not exist tomorrow. And many new jobs will get created tomorrow which don’t exist today,” Nilekani said. Even entrepreneurs won’t be able to predict the kind of pivots that will need to be done in their businesses in future.  “So whatever way you look at it, whatever you have learnt , you will have to learn something new every few years. Therefore, the biggest takeaway from your education at IIT will not be whether you understand thermodynamics or something else, but your ability to learn new things when you come across them,” he said.

“That said, machines won’t be able to replace humans. As machines become smarter, [technology] will take away a lot of jobs that machines can do well. But it can never take away jobs which require people to do well,” Nilekani said. Soft skills like being able to empathize, collaborate, work in teams, set goals and lead people can never be automated according to him. His advice to the graduating class: “Develop those kinds of capabilities to get things done in a very different way which have a very high degree of human interaction.”

The Boron Letters Chapter 2

Written By Madhurie Singh Last Modified Date: August 28, 2017

I often wrote to my sons when they were tiny. I had created their Gmail accounts before they were born and would post them letters whenever I came across something interesting, inspiring or worth sharing. Nowadays WhatsApp has taken the load though, in my opinion, an email is always a better way to share memories. At times I record my thoughts using a voice recorder on my cell phone and upload the file to their emails. Parents voice and words are and will always be the comforting go to emails when children feel lonely, sad, angry, depressed or dejected. I will one day post all those letters too with their permission.
I am going to share the jewel called The Boron Letters that I stumbled upon on Amazon. It’s a book of letters written by a father to his son. Buy the book to cut the wait of the next letter that I will post.
I am writing the whole letter here for you parents to write inspiring letters to your own children.
This letter has two messages. The first one is that one should fast once a week forever to clean their system and secondly should eat fruits each day.
Chapter 2

Wednesday, 6:57 p.m.

June 13, 1984

Dear Bond,

Today I crossed some sort of invisible mental line. It happened when I went for my initial meeting with the people who run the camp here and found out that they are total jerks. What happened as a result of that is that instead of being down and depressed I just got tougher. Perhaps I’ll write more about my new “get tough” attitude in a later letter but for now I want to get right back to this road work business.

You know Bond, I can’t stress how strong I feel that doing an hour’s worth of road work is perhaps the number one most valuable habit you can cultivate. You see, if you start your day this way, it will get you off to a great start and vastly improve the rest of your day since it will drain off a lot of tension and anxiety and, in general, it will clear out your mind so you can think better all day long!
Plus, after you get into it, it will make you feel great!
So anyway, here are some other good health habits that I think you should get into right away.

FASTING – You are, in my opinion, too young to go on any extended fasts but I really think it would be good for you to fast one (1) full day each week.

Currently, I am fasting every Saturday. And, I intend to keep fasting one day a week (at least) for the rest of my life. When you fast, you begin to normalize your body functions and also, you develop a certain self-discipline that will help you in most other areas of your life. I intend to write a lot more about fasting later on but, for right now, I just want to encourage you to begin immediately to fast one day every week.
Here are some tips. First of all, I suggest you do not tell other people what you are doing. Most people don’t understand fasting and all you will get from them on this subject is a lot of ignorant babble. Secondly, I feel that you should do very little (or no) athletic exercise on the days that you fast. You see, your “Fast Day” is the day you set aside to give your mind and body a rest. You don’t have to stay in bed all day or anything like that but you really should take it easy both physically AND mentally.
What I do on my fast days is sort of kick back and read and putter around and, also, I have found it a good time to take care of those nagging little chores and errands that seem to accumulate during the rest of the week.
In other words, I think you should do road work every morning to more or less “order your day” and fast every week in order to “order your week”.
You know what, Son? I am 46 years and one day old and the two things Ihave written to you about so far are the most important things I have ever learned.
And just think. You can start right now before you are even 16 years old. God, what a head start you will have!
Now, let’s go on. The next thing I want to talk to you about is your diet. First of all, I believe that everybody who says breakfast is the most important meal of the day is dead wrong. In my opinion all you should eat before lunch is a couple pieces of fruit. Do you remember what I said to you in yesterday’s letter? I said you should eat a piece of fruit (preferably a banana) before you start your road work.
Well, after your road work, in my judgement, what you should do is take a shower, clean up, and get dressed and get your day started. And then, some time after that, before lunch, you should eat another piece of fruit. Actually, you should eat three pieces of fruit every day (except when you fast) and I think you can’t miss with a banana, an apple or an orange. This way, you will get your potassium, your vitamin (and something called pectin, all of which is very good for you!).
Incidentally, I have read, and I believe it to be true, that fruit is the prize food of man. Also, I believe that fruit is perhaps the number one food category that Americans need to eat more of.
Watch your Mom. Watch other people. How much fruit do they eat? Very little I’ll bet, and they are missing out on something very, very important.
One reason, of course, is that fruit contains a lot of stuff that is good for you and, another reason is fruit, along with certain other foods, acts sort of like “nature’s broom” and helps keep you cleaned out and mobilating.
Anyway, as I said yesterday, I’m just warming up right now and I intend to write more on all this at a later date. But for now, it would be an excellent idea if you would start eating three pieces of fruit everyday and start right after you get this letter.
You know Bond, in addition to everything else, you are the best student I have ever had and it is a real joy to teach all these things to you. Boy I sure wish my Dad had been able to do this for me but that’s water over the dam.
But maybe we can start a tradition here. A new “Halbert Tradition” whereupon the father’s make it a point to pass down what they have learned to teach a new generation.
  It would be nice.
Okay, here’s more info on the subject of diet. What else should you eat? Well, one thing is sure: You should definitely eat a big bowl of some “bran type” cereal. Grapenuts is probably the best you can find in an ordinary grocery store and some health food stores have cereals that are even better.
By the way, remember yesterday when I asked you to get a copy of “The Joy Of Running”? Well, here are two other books you should look for: “The Miracle of Fasting” by Paul Bragg and “Are You Confused?” by Paulo Airola. Many health food stores will probably carry both of these books.
By the way, I don’t want you to feel like you have to write to me as much as I am writing to you. I do want to hear from you (and often) but you are not writing a book like I am so no guilt trips are necessary.
Let’s take a break and talk about something else. There’s an old tomcat around here at the camp named Crackers. Crackers is an arrogant cat. There is a lot of small game around here and Crackers like to catch these little critters and plays with them.
For example, a week or so ago, I was doing my morning road work and I spotted Crackers as I was coming down the backside of “The Hill”. Crackers had a little critter in his mouth that looks just like a baby chipmunk. These little guys are cute as hell and I have since (I’m getting tired) found out that they are, in reality, Antelope Ground Squirrels.
Anyway, Crackers had this cute little creature in his mouth and he brought it over to me and then dropped it. The critter just laid there. Then, after a little while, Crackers would bat it around a little with his front paws. After a while, the critter began to stir and then it tried to run away. Crackers caught it again in short order and began to repeat the whole process. What I mean is that he would carry it in his mouth and then drop it and then torment it until finally the poor thing had no fight left.
In other words, Crackers just messed with this little squirrel until he tormented the life out of it. And then, after all this, do you know what else he would do? What he would do is pick up the squirrel again in his mouth and toss his head back and throw it up in the air and then bat it back and forth while it was in the air like he was playing handball with it.
Whatever. In any case, when I told some other inmate about this he said, “Yeah, but that stupid Crackers is nothing but a stupid punk. He always takes trash from the other cats around here. There’s a black cat from over at the housing area that whips him all the time!”
What’s the point of all this? Probably, there isn’t one but it reminds me of something I read once in an article in “The Herald Examiner” in which someone was quoted as saying:
“There is no justice. There is only power.”
  That’s it for now.

I Love You and Good Luck!
Dad
Sincerely,
halbertsig

Do Too much TV or Mobile phone cause sight problem?

Written By Madhurie Singh Last Modified Date: August 24, 2017

You will be relieved after reading this post and hopefully not be worried about your child’s eye sight.

When a child is growing, the eyeball also grows. Then it stops growing like any other organ. If the eye ball is bigger than average or smaller than average there will be sight problem. So what causes the eyeballs to grow slower or faster? Retinal Dopamine is found to control the growth of the eyeballs. And Retinal Dopamine is stimulated by sunlight.

But does too much TV, mobile phone or any other device screen cause eye sight issue in children or adults?

NOPE!

As per the Australian scientists, they studied hundreds of children and adults using TV, mobile phones and laptops versus those who played outside in the sun.

They found that it was the lack of sunlight which was causing eye sight problem (myopia) not the screen time. They found that dopamine production increases when children play in sunlight which in turn helps the eyesight. When children use too much screen time, it means that they are playing less in the sun. Hence there is lack of sunlight which causes the faster growth of eyeballs, leading to short sightedness.

The Australian Vision Convention in Queensland, Assoc. Prof. Read explained it was not ‘near work’ on computer and other screens causing myopia, but a lack of adequate outdoor light. While screens are contributing to children spending more time indoors than in previous years, the research shows they are not the direct cause of the increased incidence of myopia.

“Optometrists need to make their patients aware that less than 60 minutes’ exposure to light outdoors per day is a risk factor for myopia,” he said. “It looks like even for those with myopia already, increasing time outside is likely to reduce progression.”

So make you child play in the sunlight atleast for 1-2 hours daily or 4-6 hours in the weekends.

Chapter 1
Tuesday, 5:41 p.m.
June 12, 1984

Dear Bond,

This letter is going to be the first in a long series of letters in which I will attempt to communicate to you a lot of the important things I have learned in the last 46 years.

I am going to try to teach you what I have learned about selling by mail, getting and staying healthy, how to get along with people, and, in general, how to have a good life without getting yourself all screwed up. There will also be stuff about sex, drugs and rock and roll! I’m going to try to write to you every day of the week (except Sunday) and spend about one hour on each letter. That way, by the time I get out of here we should have covered a lot of ground.
Also, I intend to reread these letters myself after I am finished and use them as source material for a book I have wanted to write for a long time. The book, unless I come up with a better title, will be called:
How To Be Your Own Messiah
These letters will ramble around somewhat. I’m going to try to keep the flow going so I am not going to slow down to edit these letters and, therefore, don’t expect them to be as precisely written as my ads and other writings.
Anyway, let’s get started. As you know, today is my birthday and, strange as it may seem, it hasn’t been a bad one under the circumstances. For one thing I got your birthday letter and the cards your Mom sent me and, for another, today is the first day I was able to run “the hill” non-stop. Being able to do that really made me feel good. The hill is a real son of a gun. It is very steep and, by my calculations, it is about 8/10 of a mile. I went around the hill 5 times for a total of 4 miles and, as I said, on one of those circuits (the third one), I did it running (actually it was more of a slow jog) non-stop.
You know what? When I came in here, just three weeks ago, it was hard for me just to walk once around that darn hill. And, before I am finished, I’ll bet you I can run around that hill ten times (8 miles) without stopping.
Well, anyway, this all leads me to the first and most important thing I want to write about which is improving and maintaining your health and physical fitness. I’ll have a lot more to say about this subject later but today I just want to “warm up” a little bit and tell you a few good ideas that you can start using everyday.  The first thing I want to talk about is “road work”. Road work is walking, jogging and running. And, in my opinion, you should do about one hour of road work everyday of the week except Sunday. I believe the best time to do your road work is right after you get out of bed.
In fact, in my opinion, the best groove to get into is get out of bed, (early) wash your face, brush your teeth, use the bathroom, etc., and then, eat a piece of fruit (I think a banana is the best) and then hit the street!   That’s it. Just get out that front door and start moving. Walk, run, jog. Keep moving for about 1/2 hour and then turn around and come back. You know, I really do believe this is the very best way in the world to start the day. It cleans you out, it settles you down and it gives you a nice glow that will stay with you throughout the day. It will also make you more clearheaded and improve the quality of your thinking. The benefits are enormous and, believe me, if you start doing this right away (like the day after you get this letter!) it won’t be long at all till you become positively addicted to your early morning workout.
By the way, this addiction is not just psychological. It is a real honest-to-God drug addiction. But don’t let that scare you. This is what’s known as a positive addiction. A positive addiction is simply being addicted to something (like exercise) that improves the quality of your life. A negative addiction, on the other hand, is being addicted to something (like cigarettes) that lowers the quality of your life.   What happens when you do road work is that, after about forty minutes, your brain begins to secrete what some people refer to as “survival chemicals”. The names of these chemicals, as far as I know, are beta endorphins and norephinphrine. Some people say these chemicals are 200 times stronger than morphine and, in my opinion, the feeling you get is sort of like a good drug high except that the “high” is not artificial and you become zestful rather than speedy and, unlike a drug high, this is a high that is good for you.
If I seem to be going on and on about this it is because it is so important and it is something you can do right away!   And, actually, of everything I have learned about in my entire life, this stuff about doing road work the first thing in the morning is very close to being the most important thing of all.
So I really hope you get started on this morning road work program as soon as you get this letter and I also hope it becomes a habit for all the rest of your life.
I Love You and Good Luck!
Dad

Let’s Solve Common Problems Faced by Children in School and Home

Written By Madhurie Singh Last Modified Date: July 1, 2017

Parenting is not easy, especially when children are evolving faster than parents can cope up. Each parent finds one or many common issues bothering them when it comes to their loved ones. The most common of all issues as per my survey are: My Child
1. Can not Concentrate / Focus / Easily distracted in class and at home
2. Gets Bored Easily
3. Gets Angry quickly
4. Does not want to write anything
5. Can not finish class work/homework on time
6. Forgets easily / Can not memorize
7. Unable to find interesting ways to learn
8. Needs to boost Confidence
9. Lacks of motivation and initiation
10. Does not show interest or take initiative
11. Back Answering
12. Very lazy / Does not want to move
13. Lack of confidence
14. Glued to gadgets mindlessly for hours together
15. Behavioral problems which are on daily basis and only with parents
16. Depression and bored

The problems are all due to past or recent changes in the environment, people or behavior with changes in expectations and emotions. We will deal with a few problems and solutions due to time constraint.

I got a call from a mom in August 2016 who was very distressed as she had found her son was being bullied to take drugs by his peers in school. She had found out the number of students who take drugs in 9th grade that even the school management was aware of but unable to control it.

After a lot of thinking, I had a lot of questions about drug and addiction. I came across a post on Facebook where this young lady was claiming to have helped several addicts in Pune using Graphology and counseling.

I quickly messaged her and had a talk with her. The whole conversation was very uplifting when I came to know that using handwriting analysis, medicines and counseling this deaddiction center has helped teenagers and youth come out clean much faster than just the counseling and medicines.

So I got really curious and asked to meet me. Somewhere, I had a hope that if this is really true then so many students, teens, youth can benefit is people are aware of Graphology.

It was last November that we met. I grilled her a lot to understand how and what kind of patients/problems she has dealt with in the deaddiction center. Addiction of mobile phones, drugs, alcohol were major ones. I was quite surprised to know that patients and their family members hide facts even when they are in the center for help!  The counselors would waste 2 – 3 sessions only to understand the real issue as that is how long it would take patients to open. After assessing their handwriting, the root cause of the addiction could be easily identified. So even before the first counseling session starts with the patients, his/her handwriting has already revealed a lot about the problem areas. It became easier and faster for the counselors to address the patient and the issues. This information was like a music to my ears. I was visualizing parents coming with the handwriting samples of their children and getting to the root cause of the same without even meeting children. It would mean so much to the teachers who face humongous load of dealing with the children each day.

But, what good is a report if it does not help in any change in the behavior.  We all know what we are or what we imagine to be based on what others think about us. But it would be beneficial if someone also had a solution to change. That is why I never believed DMIT and such analysis.

I am excited only when someone comes to me with the solution and not just the problems.

So I asked her if she helps the patients change their handwriting to overcome these hidden traits that may be the cause of the problems. She mentioned that each trait can be changed with little practice and alertness while writing.

She gave her patients patterns to be practiced daily for 21 days. On 21st day she would check the handwriting again to see if the change was forced or natural. If the change was natural, it would mean the patient has managed to overcome the problem but has to continue focusing on the pattern to make it a habit. If the change was forced, she would ask them to repeat the 21 days cycle again along with the medicines and counseling.

Now know me you know that verbal proof is not good enough. So I had to test it out.

I gave her samples of my sons’ handwritings. She mentioned the exact issues and their solution patterns along with changes we as parents should adopt. 🙂

We did everything religiously with a lot of apprehensions. But, I could see changes in my children from the first week onwards. I thought I was imagining. But seriously we were all putting a lot of effort in the words we chose to utter, the change in the authority, the compromises and the pattern practice.

Needless to say that I am very happy with the entire process of the handwriting therapy along with the counseling (to the parents).

And that is when I decided it’s time to create an awareness for all those parents who were facing common, nagging issues when dealing with their children’s studies. The most attractive part was the solution which was as simple as changing a stroke of an alphabet! If this could change a nagging issue in a child, which parent won’t go for it.
